Do Fat Bombs Help Weight Loss?

Quick answer: Not really. A fat bomb is a lump of concentrated fat calories with very little else in it. Eating fat doesn't make you burn more fat, and every gram you eat is a gram your body doesn't have to pull from storage. The one situation where a fat bomb earns its place is a hungry beginner in the first weeks, before appetite settles. After that, most people do better without them.

The myth: fat bombs keep you in fat-burning mode

The pitch goes: keto runs on fat, so eating fat keeps the fire going. A few coconut-oil-and-cream-cheese bites between meals help you hit your macros, keep ketones up and speed weight loss.

Two parts of that are off. Ketosis comes from restricting carbs, not from adding fat. KetoDick says outright that eating fat at no point fires up ketosis or gets you back into it (video NUJNFG6lLWw). And "fat burning" for weight loss means burning your fat, which only happens when you eat less than you use.

What holds up: fat bombs are calories with little nutrition

Most fat bomb recipes are some mix of coconut oil, butter, cream cheese, sweetener and maybe cocoa. That's dense energy without much protein, fibre, vitamins or minerals.

KetoDick calls empty calories his biggest concern in a lot of the keto content he sees, and he names fat bombs as the main example: "big globs" of coconut oil, butter and cream cheese (from the video cTGYIFOTPl8). His point is that a fatty steak brings a much broader nutrient profile along with its fat than a spoonful of oil does.

There's also a fullness problem. A small bite of pure fat doesn't fill you the way a plate of meat and vegetables does, so it tends to be eaten on top of meals rather than instead of them.

The arithmetic of a fat bomb habit

Fat has about 9 calories per gram. KetoDick uses the same figure when he works out that 20 g of fat is about 180 calories (video NUJNFG6lLWw).

Check the label or recipe for your own, but as an example: if each fat bomb has 10 g of fat, three a day adds about 270 calories. That's about what he suggests cutting when someone past week five is stalled and not hungry: 20–30 g of fat, or 180–270 calories a day (video NUJNFG6lLWw).

He makes the same argument with bulletproof coffee. If your target is around 1,300–1,500 calories and a fat coffee is 500 of them, all your real nutrition has to come out of the remaining two-thirds (video uXzscHudgt0). Fat bombs on top of that squeeze it further. The bulletproof coffee chapter covers that one.

The one place they can help

Month one is different. Your glycogen is gone, you're not yet fat adapted, and insulin is still coming down, so you can feel flat and genuinely hungry. KetoDick's month-one advice is to hit protein, keep carbs restricted and then eat the fat you need so you're not hungry (video 7Aixw4uRksI). He calls cutting fat in month one "kind of cruel" (from the video NUJNFG6lLWw).

He doesn't single out fat bombs as the month-one tool. But if you're in week two, starving, and the choice is a fat bomb or the bread basket, the fat bomb keeps you on plan. That's a reasonable use. It's a bridge, not a habit, and the month-one guide to eating fat to satiety covers better ways to do it with real meals.

Once you're past roughly week five and your appetite has dropped, the case for fat bombs mostly disappears.

What to eat instead

What the research says

There are no trials of fat bombs as such. The evidence that bears on the question is about what drives fat loss and fullness.

Put together: if you need a snack for hunger, protein has better evidence for keeping you full than a lump of fat does.

KetoDick's take

He's not a fan. In an early update, about four weeks in, he says the fat bombs he made were "generally gross" (from the video 9Hk0jRb_9Es). In his long beginner video he calls them a fad that's popular because they make good recipe videos for Instagram and Pinterest, and tells people not to worry about them too much (video cTGYIFOTPl8).

He's also careful about the opposite extreme. If you're past month one and choosing to go hungry to speed things up, he says do it healthily and involve your doctor, because in the race for results posted on social media, some people "flirt with anorexia" (from the video 7Aixw4uRksI). Dropping fat bombs should mean eating real meals, not white-knuckling hunger. If you have a history of disordered eating, see eating disorders and keto and talk to your doctor before you start restricting.
