Keto made easy

Dirty Keto vs Clean Keto: Three Different Questions

Quick answer: "Dirty keto" (low carb, any food that fits) and "clean keto" (low carb, whole foods only) get argued as if one is real keto and the other is cheating. They're answers to different questions. Ketosis only cares about carbs. Weight loss cares about calories. Your general health cares about food quality. Sort the question first and the argument mostly goes away.

What people mean by dirty and clean

The labels aren't official. Roughly: dirty keto means hitting your carb number with whatever's convenient, including fast food, diet soda and packaged "keto" snacks. Clean keto means the same carb number from whole foods, often with extra rules like grass-fed only, no artificial sweeteners, no seed oils.

KetoDick doesn't use either term. What he does instead is the useful part: he keeps topics separate. General health, weight loss and ketosis each get their own answer (video ffwBPoKxlDI; video DWI8qQl5BbY).

Question one: will it keep me in ketosis?

Ketosis is a carb question. Restrict carbs enough, insulin falls, the liver makes ketones (video s_sNd1v8Low). Nothing in that chain checks whether your butter came from a pasture.

He says this directly. Omega-3s, grass-fed butter and MCT oil have research behind them, but they aren't tied to ketosis (video ffwBPoKxlDI). Grass-fed is better if you can afford it, but "are they keto?" is the question he asks back (video DWI8qQl5BbY). Even Coke Zero, in his view, is probably fine for ketosis, though not ideal (video xyEZL0HuejI).

What does matter for ketosis is hidden carbs. Maltodextrin used as a bulking agent is his example of an ingredient to watch (video ffwBPoKxlDI). Packaged "keto" foods are where it hides.

Question two: will I lose weight?

Weight loss is a calorie question. Keto helps by making a deficit easier to reach without forcing it, because hunger settles. But the deficit still has to happen.

This is where "dirty" and "clean" both can trip you. A daily 400–500 calorie bulletproof coffee is, in his words, a lot of empty calories (video 9Hk0jRb_9Es). Fat bombs are mostly empty calories too, and he'd rather you ate real fatty meat (video xyEZL0HuejI). Both are "clean" by most lists and both can stall you.

A quick sum, using his own fat arithmetic: 20 g of fat is about 180 calories (video NUJNFG6lLWw), so fat works out to about 9 calories a gram. A few tablespoons of grass-fed butter "for health" adds up as fast as the drive-through does.

Question three: is it good for me?

Here food quality earns its place. Vegetables, fiber and real food matter for your health even when they don't move ketones at all. He calls fiber the most overlooked part of the diet and wants almost all your carbs to come from vegetables (video UygKGoP_BtA). He'd rather people "spend" their carbs on greens than on keto desserts (video 1vyxuWlxT5M).

He's also practical about processed food. It's still possible on keto, but he suggests keeping packaged "net carbs" treats to a few items a week (video UygKGoP_BtA). More in keto-labeled products.

The three questions side by side

Question What decides it "Dirty" approach "Clean" approach
Ketosis Carbs low enough Works if carbs stay low; watch hidden carbs in packaged food Works if carbs stay low
Weight loss Calorie deficit Works if you're in a deficit Works if you're in a deficit; fat bombs and fatty coffee can stall it
General health Food quality, fiber, vegetables Often short on fiber and micronutrients Usually better, if it includes vegetables
Cost and effort Your budget and time Easier Can cost more and add rules

Read across the rows and both versions pass the ketosis test. They differ on the other two, and not always in the direction people expect.

When "clean" becomes a problem

There's a version of clean eating that stops being about health. Talking about diet soda, KetoDick warns that clean eating can become an eating disorder (video xyEZL0HuejI). Strictness talk in groups also makes other people feel bad, and ketosis doesn't need perfection (video DWI8qQl5BbY).

If food rules are starting to run your day, or you have a history of an eating disorder, involve a therapist and your doctor before you add restrictions. That's his advice too (video xyEZL0HuejI). More in clean eating and orthorexia.

What the research says

The evidence pages here don't include a trial of "dirty" versus "clean" keto head to head. The case rests on the separate pieces above.

KetoDick's take

I've said that you have to avoid carbohydrates, and everything else is window dressing, for ketosis (video DWI8qQl5BbY). I've also said a calorie deficit is still required, even if counting calories may not be (video LbPnm9T0oxc).

And I keep my topics separate on purpose. If you've cut grains, dairy or sweeteners and you think it helped, I'm not arguing with you; it may well have. It just isn't what made it keto (video ffwBPoKxlDI).
